A couple of weeks ago, we told you that, on average, about 8.5% of eligible Texas voters show up to vote in constitutional amendment elections. Based on sheer improvement, we have something to celebrate, since 12% of registered voters voted in last week’s constitutional amendment election. Nine of the proposed amendments passed and one did not. This Texas Tribune article has some good analysis of the election. The highest number of voters weighed in on Proposition 4, which makes it harder to impose a state income tax. Despite a higher than average turnout, a total of only 1,972,842 voters weighed in on Proposition 4. Think about that. In a state with almost 20 million people of voting age and about 16 million registered voters, only a tiny fraction of them used their power at the ballot box. We can do better. The good news is that we have another chance to show up to use our power. The 2020 Texas primary election will take place on March 3rd, 2020. That date will be here before you know it. Start planning now.
