The power of the vote

The Power of the Vote

In this time of social and civic unrest, it is important to remember that voting is one of the most important ways to effect social and systemic change. Over centuries, amendments to the U.S. Constitution have expanded the right to vote that originally was reserved for property-owning white men. With time and struggle, non-landowners, African American men, women, and eventually people as young as 18 were granted the right to vote. Even as the right to vote was officially expanded, states have imposed various means to slow the expansion of the right to vote. This struggle continues. Voting is power and people have worked, fought, and died for that right.  Many leaders have written and spoken about the power of the vote.

“The ballot is stronger than the bullet.” – Abraham Lincoln

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” – Martin Luther King Jr.

“The vote is the most powerful instrument ever devised by man for breaking down injustice and destroying the terrible walls which imprison men because they are different from other men.” – Lyndon Baines Johnson

“We do not have government by the majority. We have government by the majority who participate.” – Thomas Jefferson
