Thank you to all the Texas educators, parents, and students who voted in the Texas Primary Elections last week. Just over 17% of registered voters cast a ballot, which is slightly higher than voter turnout in recent midterm primary elections. While this is progress, keep in mind that only 3 million voters decided who will represent the almost 30 million people living in the state of Texas. There is surely much more progress we can make to improve voter turnout and the work you do to create a culture of voting and model civic engagement is how we do it! Keep up the great work.
The vast proportion of Texas legislators are chosen in our primary elections, and there will be runoff
elections on May 24th for races where no one candidate won more than 50% of the votes. Quite a few Texas house and senate seats have runoffs, and each party has runoffs for some state level candidates. Turnout is traditionally even lower in runoff elections, so your vote is even more valuable and decisive. Please plan to vote!
On May 7th, local elections for many school board trustees and other local races will be held, and every Texas voter will have 2 constitutional amendments on their ballot.
We will send you helpful information to learn about when, how, and what you will be voting on leading up to both of those elections. For now, just mark your calendars and have a good spring break!
