Do you ever wonder why it is so important to create a culture of voting? If so, please take a look at some voting statistics. In 2018, The Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Life at UT conducted the Texas Civic Health Index Study. Based on 2016 data, Texas ranked 44th for voter registration, 47th for voter turnout, and 50th for talking about politics. Here is a graphic of their findings. The good news is that your work encouraging civic engagement is helping, and in 2018, Texas had the 6th highest increase in voter turnout in the country.
A study released last week by the Tufts University Institute for Democracy and Higher Education found that national voter turnout among college students doubled between 2014 and 2018, and that the increase in youth voter turnout (21 percentage points) outpaced the overall rise in voter turnout (13 percentage points) from 2014 to 2018. This is great news about the increasing engagement of our young citizens.
Seeing role models prioritize civic engagement will help make it a cultural habit for our students. Please follow Texas Educators Vote on social media for motivation, helpful information about voting, and important dates and links to help you be an engaged and informed voter.
